The Steiner curriculum, grade by grade
Every year of a Steiner Waldorf education is built around a claim about what a child of that age is going through. Here is the whole sequence, class by class, with the reason each subject arrives when it does.
What follows is the classical eight-year sequence used, with local variation, by Steiner Waldorf schools worldwide. Names differ — Class, Grade and Year all appear — but the ages and the ordering are broadly stable, because the ordering is the argument.
One thing to hold on to while reading: the subject is rarely the point. Norse myth in Class 4 is not there because nine-year-olds should know Norse myth. It is there because of what nine-year-olds are going through.
Before Class 1: the kindergarten years (age 5–6)
There is no formal main lesson before roughly age seven, and this is a deliberate position rather than an oversight. The work of these years is imaginative play, real practical help in the household, story, and a strong repeating daily and weekly rhythm. Steiner's view was that the forces a child would spend on early academics are the same ones still building the physical body, and that spending them early is a genuine cost. Whether or not you accept the reasoning, the practice is unambiguous: we will not write a timetable for a five-year-old.
The eight-year arc
Class 1 · age 6–7
Fairy tales

The first year does not teach letters as symbols to be memorised. It draws them out of pictures — the mountain that becomes M, the fish that becomes F — so writing arrives as something recognised rather than something imposed. Numbers are met the same way: not as counters but as qualities. There is one sun, one of you. Two hands, two banks of a river. Form drawing, unique to this tradition, has the child draw straight lines and curves large with the whole arm before ever asking for a pencil-sized letter.
Class 2 · age 7–8
Fables and saints

Seven- and eight-year-olds are alive to the difference between how a creature behaves and how it might. So the year pairs two opposite kinds of story: fables, where the fox is nothing but cunning and the crow nothing but vain, and legends of people who lived past their own appetites. Held together they give the child both halves of the picture. The times tables arrive now, learned rhythmically — stamped, clapped, chanted — because at this age the body memorises faster than the mind.

Practical work — the child comes down to earth

This is the year of the nine-year change, when the child first feels genuinely separate from the world, and it is answered with the most practical curriculum in the whole sequence. You grow grain and grind it. You build a shelter. You measure with your own foot and cubit before meeting the metre. The answer to I am alone in the world is not reassurance but competence: here is how people feed and house themselves, and now you can do some of it.

The world breaks open
Norse myth · local geography · human and animal · fractions
Norse myth arrives precisely here because its gods are not serene — they are flawed, quarrelsome and mortal, and their world ends. To a child who has just discovered that adults are fallible, that is recognition rather than fright. Alongside it comes local geography — the actual streets, rivers and hills around your home, mapped from a standpoint — putting the newly separate child back into a place they can know. Fractions do the same work in number: the whole, broken and still countable.

The ancient civilisations
India · Persia · Mesopotamia · Egypt · Greece · botany · decimals
Ten and eleven is often the most harmonious year of childhood, and the curriculum spends it walking the whole arc of ancient history — from India's dreaming inwardness through Persia, Mesopotamia and Egypt to Greece, where the human being steps into clear daylight. Botany runs beside it, the plant kingdom studied as a whole organism related to the earth rather than as parts to dissect.
Class 6 · age 11–12
Law, rock and cause
Rome and the Middle Ages · geology and mineralogy · the beginnings of physics · business arithmetic
Twelve-year-olds develop a fierce appetite for fairness and for cause and effect, and this year feeds both. Rome brings law, citizenship and the machinery of a state. Geology brings the literal bones of the earth. Physics begins — with acoustics, optics, heat and magnetism, always by observation first and explanation second. Business arithmetic makes percentages and interest concrete at exactly the age when a child starts asking what things cost.

The world turns modern

The seventh year mirrors the adolescent's own state: everything opening at once. The Renaissance and the voyages of exploration show a world discovering it is larger than it believed. Chemistry begins with combustion — what is actually left when something burns. Physiology treats the body plainly and unsentimentally, which is what a twelve- or thirteen-year-old needs. Algebra introduces the unknown as something you can reason about without yet knowing it.
Class 8 · age 13–14
Revolutions

The last year of the eight-year cycle takes revolution as its theme — industrial, political, scientific — because the student is living one. Anatomy studies the skeleton and musculature as engineering. Meteorology reads the sky as a system. The modern novel arrives as the first literature that argues rather than tells. The platonic solids close the sequence with something the eight-year-old could have held and the fourteen-year-old can now prove.
How the year is actually assembled
A class does not study everything above simultaneously. The year is cut into main-lesson blocks of three to four weeks, each given the first two hours of the morning, with the rest carried as shorter track lessons. A typical Class 4 year might run: form drawing, then local geography, then fractions, then Norse myth, then human and animal, then a second mathematics block — six to nine blocks in all.
Choosing which block to place where is where the season and the family's own calendar come in, and it is the part that published curricula cannot do for you, because they do not know where you live.

- Is the Steiner curriculum the same everywhere?
- The developmental ordering is stable worldwide, but content is expected to be localised. Geography, history, folk tale and festival material should be drawn from the child's own region — and in the southern hemisphere the seasonal placement of blocks has to be shifted by six months.
